The Meeting:
In California, documents cannot be notarized online. Each person signing the document(s) must be present. If you are unable to meet at the same time, you can schedule two or more appointments. The appointments do not need to be with the same notary but will need to use the same documents (no scans or copies).
You can request an appointment through my Scheduler on contact me at the phone number or email address below.
The Document:
- Ensure there are no blank spaces in the document.
- Ensure your name listed on the document is the same or has less detail than your ID.
- Example: If the signature line includes a middle name but your ID only has a middle initial, the document cannot be notarized.
Identification:
Each person signing the document(s) must present an ID that has either not expired or was issued within the past five years. The ID must be a physical object – no photos or mobile IDs.
- Preferred (Tier 1): California Driver’s License or U.S. Passport
- Acceptable (Tier 2): Any of the following so long as it contains a serial number, signature, photo and physical description of the owner.
- Other state IDs
- Foreign passport or consulate ID Card
- Canadian or Mexican Driver’s License
- Older military ID cards
- California City or State Employee ID Card
- Tribal ID Card (does not need to be a California Tribe)
- Credible Witnesses (Tier 3): If a signer does not have any of the above IDs, they may use “credible witnesses” to identify them. Note that this does not apply to all documents, please double check before your meeting.
- If the signer knows the notary, only one additional person who knows the signer is needed.
- If the signer does not know the notary, two additional people who know the signer are needed.
- The credible witnesses must not have a financial or beneficial interest in the document.
- The credible witnesses must go under oath and show a Tier 1 or Tier 2 ID.
